PATITIRI IN ALONISSOS
Alonissos doesn’t have scattered villages. There are only a few and life is gathered in Patitiri. It is the port and the capital area. Patitiri actually means wine press since they had many wine presses around for the production of the excellent local wine. The old capital of the island, Chora or otherwise Old Village is not “alive” any more. It was deserted after the big earthquake of 1965.
Starting from Patitiri, the visitor can enjoy daily excursions the the National sea park, the underwater museum, the shipwreck of Peristera and the beautiful beaches of the island from which some are accessible from land and some by sea with small boats.
THE NATIONAL SEA PARK OF ALONISSOS
Visiting the National Sea Park of Alonissos (where allowed) is considered as a top excursion, since you have the chance to meet with sea seals Monachus Monachus and dolphins.
The sea park has always been an area of high interest for tourists and scientists. After many years of efforts since 1970, the area was declared as a sea park in 1992. It is the first of its kind in Greece and the largest in Europe. Little isles of the A’zone of the park, can be visited with local small boats from Patitiri and their names are Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Gioura, Psathouria, Piperi and Skantzoura.
THE FIRST GREEK UNDERWATER MUSEUM IN ALONISSOS
The first underwater greek museum is very close to Alonissos, by the coast of isle Peristera and it is the most ancient underwater archaeological site that tourists can visit. There they can visit and admire the famous shipwreck of Peristera (from 5 B.C.) and the thousands of amphorae that are scattered on the bottom of the sea. Some of them are intact. In the area, some other ancient shipwrecks have been located and efforts are made so they can be visited.
